Tariff Refunds Are Rolling In. How Many Brands Are Actually Lowering Prices for Consumers?

If your bank account gets a few billion dollars back in tariff refunds… Shouldn’t consumers get something too? American companies are getting billions of dollars back in refunds for overpaid tariffs. So it’s only natural to ask how many of those brands are passing those savings along to us as consumers. But here’s the thing. We can’t say there are X number of brands. But we can say these 6 companies have stated they will, or are, lowering prices because of the refund they received. Not all are giving back equally. Some brands haven’t proven they lowered prices because of the tariff refund.

Six Companies Lowering Prices For Consumers

1ne. Walmart

Walmart has lowered thousands of prices after receiving a $2.9 billion tariff refund. They have lowered around 11,000 prices in the second quarter of the year. The price cuts range from grocery items to general merchandise. How much of that is due to tariff refunds is debatable.

2wo. Target

Target said it will use its $994 million tariff refund to keep prices low. This could mean lower prices when shopping at Target. But it won’t refund anyone for higher prices they may have paid in the past.

3hree. e.l.f Beauty

e.l.f. Beauty lowered some prices after receiving $50 million in tariff refunds. They lowered the price of their Halo Glow Skin Tint by $4 and saw a significant number of units sold. So they permanently lowered prices on about 10% of their products. This shows they lowered prices, but we still don’t know whether that came from their tariff refunds.

4our. Burlington

Burlington said it will use its $55 million tariff refund to lower prices on its deals. This means consumers will receive better value on their Burlington purchases.

5ive. Tractor Supply

Tractor Supply will use its tariff refund to pay for freight and fuel. As well as provide promotions and lower prices. This means consumers may see lower prices on products and know they won’t increase soon.

6ix. Amazon

Amazon has received hundreds of millions of dollars in tariff refunds. They said they will refund customers they know paid tariffs. They say the rest will go toward lower prices. Keep in mind that not everyone will receive a refund from Amazon just because they got a tariff refund.

There’s a difference between lower prices and refunds

Shipping companies such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL have stated they will refund consumers for tariffs. But these companies can only refund those they know paid a tariff. When brands lower prices, consumers will see lower prices. But that’s not the same as refunding consumers for what they may have overpaid. Prices may be lower going forward, but your household may not see spending decrease.

What About The Other Companies?

Other companies are using their tariff refunds to help lower business costs. Home Depot is one example that stated they will use the refund to lower the cost of fuel, energy and inputs.

These companies are helping themselves out, but that doesn’t mean your bank account will see any change.

Should companies be giving the money to consumers?

If a company receives a tariff refund, shouldn’t some of that money go to the consumers that paid higher prices?

It’s hard to say how much a person paid in tariffs. We don’t see the tariff cost when we purchase an item. Brands can lower prices and help consumers, but we need to see more transparency.

Consumers deserve more than a promise of lower prices. At least 6 brands have said they will lower prices or are lowering them because of a tariff refund. But we don’t know how many brands are actually passing tariff refunds along to consumers by lowering prices.
