Are Twitter & Facebook becoming irrelevant?

irrelevantDrew Magary says “I don’t use Facebook much anymore, because anyone with a brain knows that Facebook is terrible. Apart from the long-standing complaints about privacy and insufferable people posting pictures of their own feet from a fucking beach, it’s really only useful as a one-time thing. You make your account. You look up old classmates. And you either a) see if they still look good and then go gratify yourself to any long-dormant sexual fantasies, or b) contact those people, re-kindle your friendship, and then continue that relationship in a place that is NOT Facebook. You meet them for a drink. You email them. You text them. You ask them for a job.”  Is this another sign that Facebook has become uncool?

Adrienne LaFrance went as far to say that “something is wrong on Twitter. And people are noticing. Or, at least, the kind of people we hang around with on Twitter are noticing. And it’s maybe not a very important demographic, this very weird and specific kind of user: audience-obsessed, curious, newsy. Twitter’s earnings last quarter, after all, were an improvement on the period before, and it added 14 million new users for a total of 255 million. The thing is: Its users are less active than they once were. Twitter says these changes reflect a more streamlined experience, but we have a different theory: Twitter is entering its twilight.”


Twitter used to be a sort of surrogate newsroom/barroom where you could organize around ideas with people whose opinions you wanted to assess. Maybe you wouldn’t agree with everybody, but that was part of the fun. But at some point Twitter narratives started to look the same. The crowd became predictable, and not in a good way. Too much of Twitter was cruel and petty and fake.

While this may be true, I have a better theory: consumers don’t like being interrupted by advertisers who flock to the crowds because they feel they need to sell us new treatments for hemorrhoids.  My Twitter feed is now rampant with sponsored Tweets that interrupt me, Facebook determines which posts appear in my news feed and is selling my data to 3rd party advertising networks.  Can’t we have a social network that’s about US with someone trying to sell us something?
