Content marketers have long been told that “content is king,” but in today’s world, it’s more like “content is skimmable—if you’re lucky.” Despite the explosion of blogs, newsletters, whitepapers, and gated assets, a harsh truth is emerging: people simply aren’t reading as much as they used to.
The Age of the Scroll, Swipe, and Skip
Modern audiences are overwhelmed. Their inboxes are flooded, their social feeds are cluttered, and their time is limited. We now live in an era of skimming, not reading. Studies have shown that people spend just 10 to 20 seconds on a webpage before deciding whether to stay or go. That doesn’t leave much room for nuanced messaging or clever storytelling.
Even long-form content—once a go-to for SEO and authority-building—is being quietly abandoned or repurposed into bite-sized, visual-first formats, such as reels, carousels, and TikToks. In the arms race for attention, the written word is falling behind.
The Metrics Don’t Lie
Just look at the data. Bounce rates are rising. Scroll depth is dropping. Time-on-page is decreasing. Even open rates on email newsletters—once the holy grail of engagement—are plateauing or declining. It’s not that people dislike content. It’s that they no longer have the mental bandwidth or desire to engage with it as marketers had hoped.
What’s Replacing Reading?
- Short-form video – People are more likely to spend 30 seconds watching a video than reading a paragraph.
- Audio content – Podcasts and audio snippets allow multitasking in a way reading doesn’t.
- Visual storytelling – Infographics, memes, and carousels are replacing written explanations.
- AI summaries and TL;DRs – Even those who still seek written content often rely on summaries rather than reading full articles.
What This Means for Content Marketers
This isn’t to say that content marketing is dead—it’s evolving. Marketers who cling to old formats and assumptions will struggle. Those who adapt will thrive. Here’s what to do:
- Embrace multimedia: Turn blog posts into short videos, quote cards, or narrated audiograms.
- Design for scanning: Use bold headers, bullets, and pull quotes to enhance readability. Say more with less.
- Test relentlessly: Measure what people actually engage with, not what you hope they will.
- Recalibrate KPIs: Success is no longer measured in word count or page views but in engagement, conversion, and retention.
Yes, people aren’t reading anymore. But they are still consuming. The challenge for content marketers is no longer just writing great content—it’s packaging it in a way that cuts through the noise and gets consumed. That may mean fewer blog posts and more storytelling across different formats. The era of passive consumption is over. To succeed in this new landscape, your content must work harder—and faster—than ever before.
