2013 marks the first year U.S. adults spent more time viewing media on digital devices – more than any other form. Why ? Well first Pew is reporting that 7 in 10 Americans now have broadband connections and of course tablets allow users to consume content anywhere in their home. However this also highlights a key trend with consumers that I have been talking about for quite a while: time is the new currency.
Missed that new movie on HBO last night ? No problem simply watch it on your HBO app via the iPad. Even if you miss your favorite TV show DVR’s and cable company apps allow users to watch content when THEY want without viewing annoying commercials. The tablet is quickly becoming the entertainment hub for users and frankly I expect this trend to keep going strong.
Is the PC really dead ?
Stories about the demise of the PC are greatly exaggerated. Women use a PC to purchase items according to a recent survey. When asked their most frequent method of purchase:
- 47% use computer
- 45% shop in store
- 8% use their phone/tablet
Again remember that most people consume content online and for that a tablet meets all their needs. However if you need to create a resume or presentation for work you’re more than likely to use a PC and the PC most people have now works great for their needs. In the past the PC was your communication hub with the Internet but today all that can be done very nicely on an iPAD, thank you.
What does this mean for marketers ?
1ne: Integrated marketing is crucial to reach today’s time-shifting consumers.
2wo: Consumers see over 3,000 messages a day so make sure your message conveys what’s important to them.
3hree: There is no excuse not to have your site optimized for mobile.
4our: If you don’t have a digital marketing department yet you’re in big trouble.
